Open Falcon: Incompatible Hardware and software
Anyone can help mates, but some problems is not solved even with all efforts
i will start the list, and yours will continues to list any hardware, software or anything which give us a lot of trouble
We know that our beloved sim is old and have an old GFX engine, but is companies that need our money, not the contrary
this is a thread to help all people who wants to fly OF and wants to avoid problems, that can be solved buying the right hardware.
i'm starting and updating all list so if you experience a strange problem that you belives could be your hardware and software, tell us
1 - Windows Vista - not just a falcon flyers problem, vista drivers use to be a most pure sh**** and had a lot of issues. the most common symptom is "transparent" planes (unless you are the wonder woman, you would not want to fly an invisible plane) our best advice to anybody who have vista and dont want to roll back to XP is: do a dual boot with XP only to fly falcon
2 - ATI DX10 cards - (HD 2000, 3000 and 4000 series)
update your drivers to at least catalyst 8.1 or greater - without him, falcon will face the "Ghost texture" problem. from 3000 and 4000 series, combined with latest catalyst drivers, ATI HD 4870 and 4890 all works ATI cards for now including the new 5000 series runs well except a little shimmering, ok for ATI from now, if are a XP user(no way with vista or W7 drivers till now)
today, if somebody ask me what card to buy to use with falcon, i would say. "Buy ATI, because at least, they had a problem and tried to help us"
3 - Nvidia drivers since 175.15 to 178.15 forceware (the latest till now) - avoid use that drivers if you can, cause people that bought 9000 and 200 series cards can't. An issue with AA and falcon with these drivers corrupt the tacref and loadouts page. is use AA or that glitch, you need to choice
the last driver who works without problems is forceware 169.21
for almost 2 years till now, me and many people of the community tried to make NVIDIA fix that isse, but no sucess
MORE, THEY SIMPLY TURNED THEIR BACKS FOR US.
I RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM NVIDIA EMPLOYEES, SAYING THAT ISSUE IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM NOR THEIR CONCERN.
OUR RESPONSE? DONT BUY NVIDIA CARDS.
4 - Sound Blaster Audigy sound cards - is not a common problem, some have some not, BUT we know that have a lot of good sound cards out there to you assume a risk to have problems
BUT - ACCORDING to Duke "I'm using the driver from the Creative Dude(Daniel K.), who is writing drivers on his own...see his Thread here: http://forums.creative.com/creativel...cending&page=1"
5 - ***updated, looks like nvidia drivers in XP 64 bits is not a big problem, but testi if you want, i dont guess that they would gave us more problems anymore
6 - Use 1 GIG RAM absolute minimum(is serious, less than 1GB, Of will never work properly)
7 - Laptops with shared gfx memory use to not work - anyway Crazycalvin told us that his AMD64x2 Turion with a onboard nVidia 6150, all works well. probably, this issue is only with generic onboard shared ram cards. My hint to you when you want to buy a laptop to fly falcon, buy one with nvidia or ATI GFX cards
8 - Radeon 92xx series of cards - these cards have issues were the TGP screen in MFD will not show.
9 - SLI - Crossfire - Till this moment all we know is that both SLI and crossfire can works in some cases and in another cannot. we know too that a crossfire or SLI with low and mid end cards is purely loss of money(buy a higher end vicard) according to experiences of Crashdown and Hiethan(they needed t deactivate crossfire to falcon works well. Arty, who have a SLI of 8800GTs says that his SLI works magically good. Conclusion, it's a lottery. due to many variables you can have a ****ty or a fantastic system. Personally my advise to anybody who wants to do it is:
a) instead of buy a crossfire of 3870s or a SLI 8800GTs, minimize all probabilites of problems and buy a 8800(9800, 280) GTX or ultra or a ATI 4870 X2.
b) Keep in your mind that falcon have an old GFX engine and is most cases new technologies will not let falcon use his all possibilies, so dont be surprised if all fails.
c) do it by your own risk and tell us what happened - all we know is provided by other people's experience, and the combinations are almost infinity
10 - we know that OF has a heavy demand of processor and RAM, so if you are experiencing slowdowns with a Pentium 4HT or a semprom, is not an OF issue, your processor is your issue
11 - (ATI or Nvidia there's no escape) but you need to choose, when buying a new laptop to play, when buy a new GFX card, Today we know that nvidia newer cards still have the issue of no showing loadouts page with AA enabled, and ATI is rocking now, after a long time of having shitty cards. but be sure of one thing, unless you choose one of them, no fly for you. ahhh and forget that intel graphic card. it won't work
12 - Windows 7 and vista: don't blame your card if OF dont runs on him on W7.
it's a matter of compatibility. OF doesn't was made for run in these systems, openfalcon devs had XP in their minds. some guys made it run on 7, some not.
but the best thing you could do is a dual boot with XP. I have made it myself making a partition of 30gb for xp and leaving the rest for W7. now i can play my newer games on the 7 and fly OF with older nvidia drivers(for god, i'm flying it again). remember of using a program to make partitions like partition magic, and if after you installed W7 the boot menu disappeared use a software named EASY BCD
13 - in ATI 5000 series, you can't activate AA no matter you do. if you have an ATI 5000 series card and has antialiasing working, tell us what is your configs and profiles
Note: All doubs and problems solved will be added to the first post do make it more easy to new guys find all posbbilites, so, posts with solve d problems will be deleted to avoid that this could be a confuse thread(you know, when you have a problem, all you wanna have is a soon solution)
